Ferrowindow offers museumgoers an opportunity to play with magnetic fluid on a large scale with very powerful magnets. The result is often mesmerizing.
Chabot Space and Science Center had a grant from NASA to create an exhibition on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a telescope in orbit. Part of the SDO's mission is to investigate the magnetic fields caused by solar nuclear activity, and how its body appears to be magnetic and liquid at the same time.
a chemical dilemma solved
Roger Carr created a ferrofluid that was able to live in glass containers without staining. Based on my design he created a cypress table for users to work with the substance.
furniture and interface
Ben Burress had the idea that users should work with the ferrofluid from underneath, to be able to appreciate the magnetic spikes. This also solved our issue with attaching the magnets, so strong that they could attract one another across the table.
